THE AREA
Hahei is named after the Ngati Hei Iwi, who resided in the area and occupied their magnificent Pa on the Southern Head of Hahei Beach – well worth a visit to explore the terracing or to capture the expansive views.
Adjacent to the beach on the Northern end is the Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, an ideal place to explore the stunning underwater scenery either by snorkelling or diving yourself or with one of the local tour groups. The Reserve also boasts amazing scenery via a coastal walk to the Cathedral Cove where you can enjoy the natural acoustics of the famous cave.
A short drive away is Hot Water Beach where people dig in the sand to create their very own hot-water bath adjacent to the surf beach. The surfing is great – either a point break on the southern end or beach breaks along the whole beach.
If its Cafes and Restaurants you are after then the area boasts many fine examples of both – either in Hahei itself or via a short drive to Whitianga.
